Nova Spotlight: Dr. Massimo De Marchis

by Michelle Shaw

Dr. De Marchis (Dr. Max) started working at Nova House as a consultant Psychologist in 1994. His job duties were originally limited to performing psychological evaluations on Nova  House clients, psychological testing when indicated and to provide referrals for psychiatric services when appropriate, working closely with our Medical Director,  Dr. Florence Coleman.

In April 2008, Dr. Max was asked to supervise the program managers and later became the Interim Clinical Director. In addition, he assumed a leading role in the ODMH certification process for the IDDT unit where we obtained a three-year certification.

Dr. Max understands that change can be threatening, yet he is convinced that even the more veteran staff is ready for the challenge of embracing the changing treatment milieu. Dr. Max states “I feel privileged to be working with such a committed staff and having the responsibility of implementing the changes that will move Nova House again into a leadership position in the field of addictions treatment.”

Dr. Max was born and raised in Rome, Italy and served in the Italian Army for one year (this was mandatory). He completed a Doctorate in Psychology from the State University of Rome in 1979.  In 1983, he became a Clinical Polysomnographer; 1987 he obtained a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Wright State University and has been a licensed Clinical Psychologist since 1988. He has held several clinical positions from the State Hospital and other agencies. In 1996, he obtained a certification of Proficiency in the Treatment of Alcohol and Other Psychoactive Substance Use Disorders. In 1997 he obtained a CCDC III E (currently LICDC).

Dr. Max became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1987, he is married with children and step-children. Dr. Max loves Formula One auto racing, riding motorcycles and various other activities and maintains a unique sense of humor.
